Yes, a Bengal can be a great first cat, but I always tell people they should know what they’re getting into before bringing one home. Bengals are smart, curious, active cats, and they usually want to be involved in whatever you’re doing. They aren’t the type of cat that necessarily wants to sleep in another room all day and only come out at dinner time. Many will follow you around the house, supervise everything you do, and somehow manage to find the one cabinet you thought they couldn’t open.
After raising Bengals since 2008, I think the biggest thing for a first-time owner is being willing to give them plenty of interaction and things to do. A well-socialized Bengal with enough attention and enrichment can be an amazing companion, even if you’ve never owned a cat before. Their personalities do vary, of course. 🐾 Do Bengal Cats Need Much Grooming?
One of the nice things about Bengals is how easy their coats are to care for. They have short, close-lying coats that generally don’t mat or require regular professional grooming. An occasional brushing is usually plenty to remove loose hair, and many Bengals barely need that. Their coats also have an incredibly soft, silky feel that is very different from what people expect the first time they pet one.
Over the years, I’ve found that coat texture can vary a little from cat to cat, and some Bengals have an extra sparkle to their coats called glitter. Glitter catches the light and can make the coat look like it was dusted with gold. It isn’t something every Bengal has, and it’s separate from their spots, rosettes, or color.
