Ragdolls are a large breed, and they're definitely bigger than the average house cat. Adult males are usually around 15–20 pounds, while females are often closer to 10–15 pounds, although we've seen plenty of variation from one cat to another. Their long bodies, fluffy coats, and big paws can make them look even larger than they actually are.
One thing that surprises people is how long Ragdolls continue to grow. They mature slowly and may not reach their full adult size until they're around 3–4 years old. A one-year-old Ragdoll may look pretty grown up, but they can still have quite a bit of filling out to do. 🐾 Do Ragdoll Cats Need a Lot of Grooming?
Ragdolls have beautiful, soft semi-long coats, but they’re surprisingly easy to maintain compared with many other long-haired breeds. Their coats tend to have less of the thick undercoat that can lead to heavy matting, although tangles can still develop around the neck, belly, legs, and other high-friction areas. A good brushing once or twice a week is usually enough to remove loose hair, prevent tangles, and keep their coat looking soft and fluffy.
Starting regular grooming while your Ragdoll is still a kitten can make the whole process much easier as they grow. We handle and brush our kittens from a young age so they become comfortable with being groomed, having their paws touched, and getting their nails trimmed. Most Ragdolls enjoy the extra attention, so brushing can easily become another opportunity to spend a little one-on-one time with your cat.
